Just a comment from an engineer: Great work on getting the caliper measurements of the exhaust pipes. I would imagine the diameters of the exhaust tubes are exactly the same. What you are measuring is actually the long axis of an eliptical section resulting from taking an angled cut through a cylindrical tube. You can duplicate this by cutting a tube of paper at a slight angle.

I would imagine it would be very difficult to 'bolt on' a set of chrome tips because to duplicate this angle. Otherwise, I think the exhaust won't look like it fits on the car.

Can't tell for certain, Jack, but looks like smaller reading in the second photo may have been off the step of the caliper blade.

I used the same technique as you, measuring the ID of the chrome tips and got:

Left 2.374 in = 60.3 mm
Right 2.390 in = 60.7 mm

I measured the actual interior diameter of each pipe about 1" in from the end. (I have some precision instruments in my shop).

Left 2.421 in = 61.49mm
Right 2.462 in = 62.53mm

So my right side is bigger - the opposite of yours. Sounds like the tolerances are +/- 1mm or so on the pipes, maybe tighter on the chrome tips - not unreasonable.

I put the dial calipers on mine and the best I can tell, they aren't really that round. I got different measurements at ninety degrees on the same pipe.

The exhaust on my Mini would expand when it was warm, causing the tips to extend further out past the car.

I wonder if the diameter expands also?

Were these measurments taken with the exhausts warm or cold?

Mine were taken cold. The I.D. of the pipes on mine is perfectly circular. Haven't measured the O.D. of the chrome tips.

yes, but the M-sport package doesnt include bigger exhaust tips so it must be standard.
