I have the car for almost 5 months and just hit 3k miles a last week (was away a lot this year), and SES came on. The message was excess emission. I took the car in for service. they replaced the gas cap, saying there's a hair line crack. Fine! Today, I got the same message again, 100 miles later. Anyone else experienced this problem? Is there more to this or I will need new cap a few days after every fill up from now on?

Usually cat converter or oxy sensor issue. What really happened was that they reset the system, applied a gas cap, and prayed for the best. Now, the sensor has triggered again. The gas cap was a cruel hoax on a BMW warranty claim. (This is why you can't get your car pollution inspected within 100 miles of a system reset). Now, tell them to get to work.

I had the feeling there was more to it. I'll find out tomorrow.

Ask for the P Code that they pulled. It might even be on your work order. It may give more information.

Ray - How would a state inspector know the light has been reset? I can tell you for sure that, in VA, either they don't care how long it's been since the last reset or they just can't tell.

It shows up on the plug-in readout screen. I saw an independent shop guy do it with my 540, after a cat converter install, but I can't recall what the screen showed. Probably shows mileage at reset, and there is quite a bit of history, including VIN entered on that little screen (and his happened to be a Snap-On brand, with the BMW head). So rest assured that der Bavarian Big Brother will know even more.

RE: 2006 530I; Just received a recall notice regarding emissions. Day later also received notice in car.

Basically they have to update the computer regards to monitioring the sensors. Otherwise it will not pqass emission test.

If the gas cap and O2 sensor are checked for functional, then the next and most common culprit is crank sensor malfunctioned, check engine light will be one. When the crank sensor malfunctioned, ECU will receive incorrect gear location and it gets confused.

Do the vented seats have butt sensors too? Wow!!!!

Actually it's : Increased Emission, not excess. I took another look.

Okay, I'm not even going tell you what I got as a loaner but it's got 17" wheel AND tire. I'm getting 40MPG.

The prelim is a fuel pump leak, WTF? Maybe I'll get it back tomorrow, maybe not...
