Ever hear of a leaking rear main seal?

My Ride: 95 M3 CAI, chipped, pulleys, Xbrace, doesn't give headaches every time I start up!
04 545i all the goodies INCLUDING HEADACHES!

Sorted all my leak out and I still have one that looks like it coming from the rear of the engine were the trans. attaches to the engine.
How common is this? There are some rubber plugs there, that when removed are soak with oil.
This sound like an expensive repair

Rear main seal on an E39 is around $1200-1400 at an Independent mechanic. On the e60, Im sure it would be about the same.
