Aside from an increase in hp and the high precision fuel injection, how similiar is the two engines. Is the 255hp the only engine with the magnesium design or is the difference just the high precision injection.

Edited in bold:
Baring in mind the overhaul it's not much left of the "old" M52 engine. The new engine still has its typical BMW sound and character, but the N52:
* sounds like a diesel when started cold
* doesn't consume much licquor, it's almost a teetotaler!
* has a more turbine like acceleration - there seems to be plenty of power at any revs
* the sound, especially >4500 rpm, is more "aggressive".
For me, the N52 is

The question refers to the inline 6 natural aspirating engine. How different is the 06 530(255hp) compared to the 07(272hp) are they both made with magnesium block and is the high precision injection exclusive to the new 272hp engine?
The new 3.0 l N54 non turbo engines (525i, 530i) has a completely new High Precision Injected 24-valve top-block.
It makes all the difference.

My Ride: 2007 530i, white/black manual, sports package, nav, PDC, etc.
It's a valid question, but unfortunately BMWNA is not importing that engine and probably never will (at least in the E60 series).
For some reason, their 6 cylinder engine lineup has gotten a bit confusing in the U.S. because the X3 and the Z4 are on a slightly different path. The Z4 still has the older engines, while the X3 has a new 260 hp motor.

All are 3 liter six-in-lines with full aluminum construction with magnesium highlights, including the N52 and N53 (US 528i).
The new 3.0 l N54 non turbo engines (525i, 530i) has a completely new High Precision Injected 24-valve top-block.

The 530i that was available in the US was 255hp the 530i available in Europe is 272hp, are u saying they are the same engine (magnesium highlights, High Precision Injected) with mods for more hp?
