My Ride: 2004 BMW 545i

Hello everyone, I had a general question about the timing on the n62 2004 545i engine timing. I am searching desperately for a solution to a problem with my car and I think actually confirming the timing is off would lead me in the right direction. So the question I have is, Is there a way to see if timing is off by removing the valve cover without buying the timing tool?
I saw that the timing tool for the n62 is about 250 dollars and I'm not aware of any loan a tool opportunities for a BMW specific tool like that. I wouldn't mind buying it but if that's not the problem I don't want to buy a tool I am not going to need.
Is there a notch that should be lined up when the engine is in a certain position and if so where would i find that? I haven't taken the valve covers off yet but I will most likely have to soon.\\
Any input is appreciated . Thank you.
