Exactly what I was thinking.. I'll buy it by the 55-gallon drum at that price.. LOL!!!
$3, $4.....its all the same when youre "RICH BITCH".. Well it has been a while since I bought oil, but last I remember Wal-mart sells syntec blend for about $2.50 a quart, and the full synthetic is about $4. I did say I shop at Walmart.....so I have to rescind that rich statement

so all in all you can expect to pay abou $55ish for the complete oil change if you DYI....which is better then the $$$3bones the stealer charges...haha

I use 10W60 (M oil) for more of 2 years and no problem. It is superb!! They (dealer) said too tick for non-m and it is only for M cars but the racing European experts says it is highly recommend for valvetronic like our all non M e60. It may be false economy. It is expensive OIL $15 per liter/quartz.

I use Total 5W30 Its BMW LL04 approved. Its sold under Total name now but is actually Elf Oil.

QUARTZ INEO MC3 5W30 New Low SAPS generation oil especially developed for BMW and Mercedes-Benz Group engines. Its very high technology optimizes the functionnement of the anti-pollution systems, such as the Diesel Particulate Filters.

You decide ... Both are quality synthetics .. The BMW Oil is API rated SJ; Mobil 1 Extended Service is API Rated SL.

Disregard the oil weights pictured here; I use the Mobil 1 15W50 in another vehicle used for extended high speed driving at high ambient temperatures.

Classification SJ was adopted in 1996 and recommended for gasoline engines in passenger cars and light trucks starting in 1997 model year. Applications specifying API SH can use the newer API SJ service classification. Note that where applicable certain letters in the sequence will be skipped to prevent confusion with other standards. In this case, SI was skipped since industrial oils are currently rated according to SI classifications.

SL- For 2001 Gasoline Engine Service: Recommended for gasoline engines in passenger cars and light trucks starting in July 2001. SL oils are engineered to provide improved high temperature deposit control and lower oil consumption. Applications specifying API SJ can use the new API SL service classification. Note that some SL rated oils may also meet the latest ILSAC specification and/or qualify as energy conserving. SL is the latest specification.

Engine Oil?-img_0132.jpg
I used the one on the right recently.
BMW recommended / approved engine oils

The oils listed below meet BMW?s Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in BMW
Passenger vehicles and SAVs in the US market with gasoline engines.
BMW Long-life rating LL-01
Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30
Use only oils with an API rating of SM or higher.
The choice of the right SAE grade is based on the climatic conditions in the region in
which you normally drive your BMW.
To best determine which SAE grade is best suited for your vehicle, contact an
authorized BMW center.

Sorry my bad, I just looked at your profile info and there was no location.....anyway I havent heard anything to the back up the claim about whether the Castrol was refined in Germany or the US if it made difference or not. Honestly oil is oil brand to brand, Castrol just paid a licensing fee to BMW, plus I am sure they donate oil to BMW when testing their engines...so honestly stick to a brand your loyal to and be happy.

Main thing is you want full synthetic and use the proper viscosity for the season and the BMW recomendations.
What viscosity do you recommend for summer & winter?

Mobil1 has this on their site:

Why 0w30? Aren't we supposed to use 5w30??

All things being equal, the smaller the first number, the better. As it stands, there are no motor oils on the market thin enough to lubricate at cold startup, no matter how warm your ambient climate is.
