I got an engine malfunction warning along with a service engine soon dummy light tonight. Engine is running extremely rough with no power. I've done a search and seen some people with various different problems. Any consensus on the problem so I can tell my SA what do do to fix it  . It's a 2005 545i with about 14,000 miles.

It could be the DME which is the main problem with alot of V8 5 Series. The DME is the main engine managment system. It also could be a valve timeing issue. Does it run rough when you first start it? If so, it could be the Gasoline that you use. All BMW V8 car are not ethanol software and this WILL make the car idle rough. Three BMW approved Gas Companies are Chevron, Shell, and I believe BP. I hope this helps. Since I work for a dealership, those are 2 of the possible reasons behind what you are describing.

So no confidence in your service centre's diagnostic skills then.

I guess you're using the best, most convenient one too. Bummer.

I expect (would hope at least) you'll get the same menu of choices on here that the service centre would use anyway.

I wonder what any of us would feel like if our own "customers" came in and started giving us a series of recommendations on the best course of action to provide their "service"?
