seems this is a common error message (not only turbo engines) so my concern is do i need to bring car into dealer for service?? the light no longer appears after shutting engine down and restarting & car is running fine but still after researching previous posts im beginning to wonder if theres more to just faulty fuel injectors.... anybody have some insight??
also, this error message occurred while i was performing high-spirited driving or how some ppl call it "beating" (lolz) on my car..... constant hi-rev'ing of the RPM (redline) carving up/down roads & hills from 40-90mph and heavy braking around twisties for relatively 2 good hours or so then while we're cruising @60 i hear the ping and read "ENGINE MALFUNCTION" etcc....
fyi... car is stock no engine mods.... =(

rich, definitely have it checked out... its probably a sensor that needs to be changed. at least youll know for sure whether or not this is a real problem. btw- you said you heard a ping? what kind of ping? like a predetonation ping? hope your not using regular gas! ![Laughing](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/laughing.gif)
edit: didnt the turbo cars have problems with fuel pump?? rich, do the search lol

it could be the fuel injectors but most likely it is the high pressure fuel pump that is causing the error.
it is a known problem that the n54 engine has a faulty hpfp. it should be covered under warranty.
I had the same problem before but after the dealership replaced the pump I haven't had the problem since.

Hmm, I wonder where this high-spirited driving occurred. All I saw was a 535i that could not keep up with my 550i at the July 25th meet. J/K ![Laughing](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/laughing.gif)

It won't clear but turning the car off.
