Default Engine malfunction

Can a battery cause engine malfunction (engine check light)? And what is the average life of the battery under normal used?

Battery life depends on lot of factors. Battery life degrades significantly when you run it down completely (by leaving lights on). Some times one of the cell (there are 6 cells in a battery) goes bad rendering the entire battery useless. It also depends on the location (northern climates with freezing temps). Is the car stored in a garage or left out in the open?

With that said, I have gotten more than 7 to 8 years out of a battery on other cars. However, those cars are not as 'power-hungry' as the E60. As a result, if you got 6 years or above, consider yourself lucky. The first thing I did when I bought my E60 was that I replaced the battery and had the alternator remanufactured. Any faults in the charging system can reverberate thru entire car electronics.

That's my $0.02.

The reason I ask, because I had it changed in Oct 2010 now the dealer said my battery on its way down again and that cause the check engine light (engine malfunction).

My car was build in November 2007, so, about only 3 years now only just above 2 years battery bad again. and I never left the light on.

I'm not a mechanic but I doubt a dying battery will cause a check engine light. At any rate, there's a separate iDrive warning for a battery if it starts to excessively discharge or if the voltage is low.

I don't think it would either. Buying the battery from the dealer is a waste of money. The warranty is only two years. Get it some where else and then have it registered at a indy shop.

OP, aside from the check engine light, what other symptoms are you having with the car? Also, provide year, model, and miles.

No other symptom, the check engine light only pop up couple times and hasn't show up again sine. The stealersship checked and can't find any faults code, only to tell me that the battery is low @50% that may cause the faults and recommend to change the battery which only cost $695

My car is a 2008 528i 60xxx miles still under CPO.

60k miles? Maybe it's just a scheduled service light? Find another dealer or a reputable independent. I changed the battery myself. About $230 for the same OEM battery and $50 to have an independent register it.

I forgot about you changing the battery in 2010. Get a battery tender for that.
