this link should help a bit, but the e46 is different for sure. http://www.e60.net/information/options/engines/

Actually I dont think there were much differences. I think they were both the same engine. 2002 E39 525 used the M54 engine and the 2004 E60 525 also used the M54 engine. There might be some slight internal parts that were different but over all I think they were more similiar than different.

Unless you ment the E46 3 series... 325

Your post said E46 525 so thats confusing... I'm assuming you ment E39 525...

The 325 in 2002 had both M54 and the M56 engine listed... so dont know off the top of my head what the differences are... I got a book at home that explains them but not here.

In Europe ....

According to wikipedia a 2002 E39 525i would have had a M54B25 engine, which was introduced in 2001.

"The M54B25 is a 2.5 L (2494 cc) engine with an 84 mm bore and 75 mm stroke. It is all-aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners, fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a reinforced plastic intake manifold. Output is 192 hp (143 kW) at 6000 RPM with 175 ft.lbf (237 Nm) of torque at 3500 RPM. It is built in Steyr, Austria."

The engine in the e60 525i seems to be identical aside from a small increase in HP.

I don't know what an M56 engine would be ... it's not listed on wiki

Non, both are M54B25 gas R6 engines.

The engine was introduced in late '99 for the facelifted E39 (520i, 525i and 530i),
and soon it was also available for the E46, 3-series (320i, 325i and the 330i).

But the history goes down to the late 80' when the M50 motor family was founded.
VANOS, aluminum and 4 vales came the the six-in-line BMW engine motor family.

I have owned a E46 325Ci, E39 525iA and a E60 525iA with this engine.

It works as a clock and gives quite much more power that the stats say...

The current E60 525i and 530i has a N52 engines.

But the new E92 335i twin-turbo is already a N54 high Precision Injection...
