New owner that has learned a lot of useful info from this forum, but this one has me stumped. My new 550i is at the dealer tonight getting the M5 spoiler installed and the 7 series loaner has me thinking. When shifting from P to D or P to R, does the electronic shifter in the E60 require a single pull/push or two pulls/pushes (obviously with the button on the left depressed.) In other words, I find that when removing my 550i from P and reversing out of the garage, I have to push the shifter forward twice, rather than one smooth motion. The same is true if going into drive from park, two pulls are required. However, the 7 series loaner will go into D or R with one up or down motion on the shifter. Just curious to know if this is normal behavior for the electronic shifter found in the 5er, or if I should have to shifter inspected while at the dealer. Thanks.

On the 5er I've found that from park, pressing the side button and waiting about half a second, the shifter will go right to reverse. Try to do it simulatenously and it acts just as you've described.

That is interesting, have not tried that, will give it a try. I can shift directly into D from P (with button depressed) but most of the time I have to shift twice when going into R from P but I have managed to go straight to R from P a couple of times, not sure why it happened, could be that on those times I must have pushed the lever harder to beyond the reistance point.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen. So it sounds like what i am experiencing is normal or at least for the maneuver into R. I'll keep an eye on it and have the issue addressed at the first service if necessary.
