EfficientDynamics on 520d LCI, can it be added?

I wanted to know what is the difference between a 2008 LCI model without EfficientDynamics and 2009 LCI with EfficientDynamics? Is it the engine, modules or just software? Wanted to know if it could be added to a 2008 LCI 520D?
