My Ride: 07' 550i sport; Sapphire Black/Auburn; sport package; steptronic; navigation with R.T.T.I.; heads up; cold weather package; Logic-7; BMW MOST ipod kit; Motorola V3 snap-in adapter; rear heated seats and rear shades; anthracite headliner; sirrius sat. radio; M-aero kit; OEM style 166 Wheels with 245/35-19 front and 285/30-19 rear Michelin PS2s.
The 6 series is a great car, but it is no featherweight. In fact it's not much lighter than a 5 with the same motor. And I believe that a convertible 6 is about the same weight as an equivalent 5er. And the acceleration numbers confirm these weight stats. A 550 is quicker to 60 than a 645i, and ties a 650i convertible. A 650i seems to have only a .2 advantage to 60 and in the 1/4 mile over a 550.
So how is it that when I was following a friend in their 645 (04'), he took off faster than me in my 550 repeatedly (straight line, corners etc...). I cought up by 40 mph then passed convincingly, but I guess the 6er has better traction on takeoff. It was about 33 degrees (F) ambient and we both had snows on, although mine are downsized to 245s in the rear. The 6er had stock size rear snows (also 245s). BTW - I didn't disable the traction at all, neither did he...
Has anyone had fun against a 6er to confirm this apparent traction advantage. Maybe its the shorter wheel base? I wonder if its geared differently?

It could be gearing, our 650 definitely feels faster out of the hole than the 550......

Check what the final drive ratio is for both 550 & 650. I bet the 650 has a higher ratio which gives it a little faster acceleration off the line.

Sore the 545/645 yes .
2.93 for manual/SMG 545i
3.38 for steptronic 545i
3.23 for the manual/SMG 645ci
3.46 for the steptronic 645ci
I'm sure it is the same on the 550/650 .
Basically, 5 and 6 are the same car .

Yep ! Just checked and both cars have identical gearing: 4.17/2.34/1.52/1.14/.087/.069.............. must be the driver.

Final gear ratio, as Alex and vt mentions is predominantly the determining factor between the 5er and 6er (same engine) - the 6er has a slightly faster acceleration factor due to that ratio as it translates the torque on the road faster even to a 550i which shares the same ratio with a 545i. Simple as that.
Gear ratios has been discussed a lot here guys .."search"
