Just spoke to my SA at my local dealership and strongly recommended against changing the fluid before 6yrs or 100K. He said that they will do it but will put in writing that they are not liable if the transmission fails after the change and customer is responsible.

Do this sound right? It sounds a little outlandish to me.
So, from what they are saying, if you do it sooner, they are not responsible, what a load of crap! So wait till 6yrs/100k and its ok if you do that but if you do it sooner, you are on your own. What kind of logic is that??

How do you go about getting the old fluid out of the torque converter so that you can get a complete change?????
I plan to do a 2nd change to get my averages up . I probably got about 60-65% this time, next time it increase the average to 90% or so.

I used to put in 15k miles/yr on my 911. My driving was limited from around May to the beginning of November and I practically lived in that car. I really wanted to enjoy the car and not just look at it in the garage. Anyway, I used to change the oil and transmission fluid before putting it away in the winter and then do it again in the spring when I woke her up. So, to summarize, I changed the tranny fluid twice per year and I changed the oil and filter 4 times a year (6 month span). If people can't afford that, then they shouldn't be driving a Porsche or BMW in the first place.
+1. You definitely sound like an enthusiat who likes to enjoy his cars. Good on you to drive your cars. In general, most people nowadays own Porsches for others. I had a buddy of mine who bought a Carrera S, very well optioned, stickered over $110k, took out a 36 month lease and then he tells me 2 yrs later he has put 2000 miles on the car since new, jeez. He pays over $1k in leasing every month and all it ever does is sit in the garage.

Raj,

Any thoughts on the Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF? The product description claims it is compatible with Shell M1375.4 used in the current ZF 6 speed transmissions. Can that be used as replacement for OEM oil?

Here is the link to the PDF:

I wouldn't use anything that isn't on ZF's list. I've attached the most recent list from their site (10/1/09). Why not just use the ATF-1 (Pentosin) from RM European for $16 per litre? It's the OEM fluid and it's fairly cheap...

+1.
I wouldn't chance it. BTW, this place sells the same Pentosin ATF1 for less than $10. I didn't buy it from them but read this elsewhere.

Good luck.

Yes, I am always a big fan of everything OEM too. Unfortunately ZF Lifeguarg Fluid 6 and Pentosin ATF 1 are not available in local stores. Well, I guess I can always order on line, however, a quick comparison of the physical properties of Castrol and Pentosin reveals that Castrol is a better fluid.

Viscosity Index: Castrol-200, Pentosin-171 (higher is better)
Kinematic Viscosity at 100?C: Castrol-8.0, Pentosin-7.6
Kinematic Viscosity at 40?C: Castrol-36.6, Pentosin-38.0
Pour point: Castrol-(-48?C), Pentosin-(-51?C) (lower is better)
Density: Castrol-858 kg/cu.m, Pentosin-850 kg/cu.m

Any mechanical engineers or other technical experts that can shine in on this comparison?

Where did you find out that the Pentosin ATF1 is the same as the zf lubeguard6? I hope it is, but I still haven't seen anything in writing.

Thanks a bunch.

It's not the same, it's accepted per ZF's list I posted. I said OEM because that's what RM European says on their site and since BMW uses Pentosin hydraulic fluid I beleve them. But hey I could be wrong
