My Ride: My Car 04 Z4 Her Car 04 525
Default

Hi

I have a 2004 E60 with 98,000 miles.
The car has a surging problem when driving at about 40mph
The Tach jumps from 1500 rpm to 1800 rpm and u can
feel it in the drive, so it is just not the tach bouncing.

This was evident prior to the 100k service which I just had done
to try and correct this problem. As part of the 100k Service they recommended
doing a Fuel injection flush. The Fuel injection flush consists
of isolating the fuel rail and running the FI cleaner directly into
the system. It also includes a throttle body cleaning.

So the car still has the same surging problem after the 100k service.
The computer has been scanned and shows no errors.

Anyone seen this or know what I can try next ?

It sounds like maybe the transmission is downshifting or hunting for the right gear.

Do you know what PROGMAN version your have? There have been several transmission updates along the way that may improve performance.

Another thing to try is the transmission reset where you hold down the accelerator with the key in the on position.( Search for specific instructions)

I was just wondering did they also perform your complete tune up which is changing your spark plugs and stuff besides cleaning your fuel injection?

My Car had the same problem...Rpms would bounce 300-400 rpms while holding a certain speed
Only did it while it was cold though.... Once fully warmed up it wouldnt do it
Took it to Bmw and they replaced the transmission
Turned out to be a problem with the torque converter

Hopefully you dont have the same problem

Is that the only problem you are encountering? How is idle? If you are accelerating through 40 mph to 60mph, does it still do it?
Has the car been serviced by the book or have you just changed the oil? Has the fuel filter ever been replaced?

Idle seems to be OK car did stall once while stopping at a light but only one time.
Accelerating there is no problem from 40-60 .... At higher speeds I see no bounce car will run fine at highway speeds.

Fuel filter has not been replaced. Not sure fuel filter is on BMW's change schedule

Its hard to tell these days because the fuel pump is electric, but it may go into a lower pressure mode at a steady speed and that might be just enough to not get gas through a dirty filter. Its probably $50 and should be changed anyway if it was not done.

Hey, don't know if anyone is still reading into this, I have a similer post on bimmerfest.com, I have a 05 545i auto, with these same issues , and it seems to do it a lot of the time. It is becoming very annoying, and the dealer states, that if something is seriously wrong, they will replace it under warranty since it was a pre existing condition, has anyone figured this out? My other post is http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthrea...&highlight=
Thanks

I had a very similar problem with my 530d M Auto.......

Never did trace the problem .......sold now.

Felt like the torque converter bumping in and out, or like the clutch coming in and out if you was driving a manual.
