Default E60-N52 Oil filter/oil cooler question

Hello all,

I've recently purchased a 2006 530i, N52 6MT.

This car has had a number of issues that I am working through. This past week, I did the oil cooler/oil filter housing repair.

I went to find the torque specs for the oil cooler to the oil filter housing and I found them on a bmw forum site, can't remember which one. What I found was 15-16ft/lbs (20-22 nM) of torque, which according to the (BMW Workshop Manuals > 5 Series E60 530i (N52K) SAL > 4 Tightening Torques > 11 Engine (N52K) > 42 Oil Filter And Lines > 1 AZD Oil Filter Element With Connections) that torque is wrong.

It is actually, 16nM for the cooler housing to oil filter housing and 22nM for the oil filter housing to the engine.

I should have double checked the torque specs, but I didn't. All I can do it this point is fix it and move on.

So, I over-torqued the oil cooler to the oil filter housing and I am squirting oil from the oil cooler gasket all over the air box and upper radiator hose.

My question is, in the event of over-torquing these bolts, which one yields, the bolts, or the threads on the oil filter housing?

A steel bolt usually beats an alloy hole.

Over torquing doesn't always result in failure of the bolt or thread, but in a distortion of the mating surfaces or over compression of the sealing material (gaskets), which results in leaks. This is especially true when many bolts are used for sealing purposes - need to torque evenly is more important than the absolute torque value - within reason, of course.
