E60 DME Swap Possible?
#1
Hello all,
I'm looking into obtaining a DME (Part Number: 12147567180) from a wrecked E90 325i with an N52 engine and installing it on my E60 530i with an N52 Engine. I was told that this may not be possible because the ECW may not work with the new DME. I'm thinking that this may not be necessarily true. I've read that there is a way to change the VIN number that the DME is assigned to via software (i.e. WinKFP) and reprogram the DME for my specific vehicle. Anybody have any experience with this scenario? Thanks in advance.

It will not work. DME must be paired to EWS (? security module? having brain fart) in order for car to start. The pairing is a one time afair only and cannot be undone or overwritten. You can however overwrite the DME software of your module if you have know how. Just cannot move from one car to another.

you can use that DME however if you install it yourself, the car will not start due to a conflict with the rolling security code between the EWS and DME. You would either have to install it then have the car towed to a dealer for coding or pay them to do the whole thing. from what I remember, the DME can be recoded up to 10 times.

The DME can be programed/updated 10 times or so, but it can never be paired to another EWS (well, easily?never say never?some specialty speed shops can). So, generally yes you have to buy new.

Like I said the DEALER would need to do it. The EWS and DME can be paired as you call it even if they are from different cars. And by the way it is called EWS/DME alignment or synchronization. Keep in mind that the DME has to be the same part number or a compatible part number. For instance you cant take one from a 1990's 3 series and put it into a 2011 3 series.
