*noob alert*
I recently bought an '06 E60 and tried to plug a mobile phone adapter into the cigarette lighter with a little too much force.
The cigarette lighter is mounted in the console just behind the gear lever and when you push back the cover the socket used to rise gracefully to present itself to the user. unfortunately it now lays limp and appears to not be connected to anything at the back to provide power to it.
Is there something easy i can do to fix this, or is it an expensive trip to the dealer to have a new part fitted by them?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help

Same thing here, if it is a pre lci it is quite abit of a job to fix this. It is the spring tha pops the lighter up. Quite common to fail. You need t remove the center console to have access to the mechanism. You could do it yourself if you're familiar with cars. I don't know how much a dealer willcharge.. For them is an hour work but bh all dealers charge more..

I had this same exact problem just a few weeks ago. One BMW dealership was charging me around $140 just to look at it and possibly $800 in parts and labor because it involved taking out the whole center console. It was obvious this particular dealer didn't want to deal with my lighter issue that day since there were like a whole host of other cars lined up to be seen with more pressing issues. Luckily when I brought it to another BMW dealership, they fixed it for free since my car is CPO.

if your car is still under warranty then go any dealer. same thing happend to me so went to the dealer and said that its broken from the start so they replaced it, i think it took the techs to do that in half an hour so i dont think its that big of a job that costs $800. but who knows cos its bmw.
