I know this is very old, but i have the same problem

I buy a 2004 530i e60, the first problem was the IBS sensor, it was broken (i dont know how).

I think that was the "charge" problem. I Buy a new IBS sensor with adapter (the new model came in 2 parts), and..... same problem....

The problem was the alternator. I live in Paraguay (South America), and the dealer here its a shit.... a new alternator will cost more than 1200 U$, and buy it from USA will take 10 to 15 days AND still cost some 600 OR 400$ (the difference will be a OEM new one, OR an aftermarket).

I take off the alternator and check that have the "voltage regulator" that can be easy take it off (only 3 bolts), i go to a parts dealer and see that it was the SAME from some Audi, VW, and other cars, it cost me 45$ and now runs PERFECT.

I'm new here so i still dont know how to put some pictures to you see which one was the problem, its easy to fix and take me 1 hour to take off the alternator, change the part and mount it again.

This car is a USA version.

PS: sorry if my writing is not good. We speak spanish here

can you post the part# and brand of the regulator (I'm assuming it's a Valeo part since that's who makes the alternator) so that we can find it here in the future?

Here is some pictures of the original regulator, i show you the # is on it, because i buy an aftermarket one, i dont find the VALEO, but works anyway.

I use this one: http://starterok.com.ua/regulyator-g..._VRPR2292.html (its Chinese)

Here is a list of Valeo regulators, there are many cars that use the same one:

I got the same problem and I found it come from pulley which was almost pass away : ) sometimes it was free spin that temporary created the problems (charging fault , hard sterring , air-con , low power battery and importantly coolant pump error)

I had the same problem today and have had 2 alternators changed withing 3.5months so today I did a bit of research. I realized that when the error came on my alternator drive belt had snapped or rather was worn out. I had it replaced and the car is running fine

[QUOTE=willy beamin;1418137]So u guys are sure it's the alternator cuz I've been having the same problem and I changed the alternator twice[/QUOTECHECK YOUR ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT. If its not running then the alternator is not turning hence fault in charging
