Hi All,
A have recently got myself a 2005 530D M-Sport and need some simple advice and have been reviewing this site with interest.
There is a few things people advise doing and I have done most of them:

Updated car to latest software version with the $tealer.
I changed my oil and filter
I changed my air filter (what a job compared to most cars)
Checked my Engine (Turbo) breather and have the new one so that was fine
Replaced all brake discs, new pads and wear sensors.
TO BE COMPLETED: Diesel Filter, Automatic Gear Box Oil

And the car is perfect, apart from its down on power compared to my mates 2005 530D M-Sport.

So....
Where is the location of the EGR valve so I can close of the vacum pipe as advised in many posts?
Would my car have the dreaded inlet manifold "flaps" that seems to cause engine disasters, how can I tell?

Is there anything else I should check over on this car apart from what I have done?

I just want to keep it running as smooth and powerful as I can.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Mark

Hi Mark.

The EGR valve locates in front end of the intake manifold. You can see it in this pic (the pic is from my swirl flap thread).

If you want to shut the EGR system working, you have to plug the pipe coming from left. But doing only this will make an error code. The car must be reprogrammed to know that EGR valve has been shut off.

And yes, your car has the swirl flaps, so you should take the removal into consideration. Here's a link to a DIY thread.

WOW!
Thanks for the quick reply, really impressed.

So not to sound completedly stupid, but is the vacum hose just under the EGR that you shown in the picture (thanks for that)?
And is the reprogram to say the EGR is disabled a $tealer job or can it be done manually?

I also read posts where you can get the EGR disabled by the programming without needing to block the vacum hose, is this a better solution.

Pity about the flaps being on my car, I was kinda hoping it had none or a "newer" version that seems to last, looks like my weekend will be booked up with the car

Thanks again!

I don't know much about disabling the EGR, but I think you can do it with only programming too. A dealer job however or someone with proper tools and stuff.

If your car has a diesel particle filter, then you have newer swirl flaps. I still would consider removing them.

Hi All,
I decided to remove the swirl flaps last night.
I had the newer ones installed as I have a DPF and they seemed pretty solid, but took them out anyway.

The muck and dirty in the manifold and EGR valve was amazing, luckly I bought a new inlet manifold from a mate so it was spotless )
I also plugged the EGR vacum hose already.

Cleaned the EGR and fitted to new Inlet manifold with no more flaps and its been perfect so far, low end torque is missing on take off now (slightly) but rev range is very smooth, just miss that "kick" into the chair when you floor it. Sine the last software update the low end kick was degraded heavily, and now its slightly softer again most likely becuase of the flaps.

As I had no dremil or tool to cut the flap out of the housing I decided to just cut the plug completely and shown in th picture which makes it a plug )

Only problem now is the High Emissions warning when I drive the car and the egine light staying on which is annoying, anyway to remove?

So thats it all done, any problems I'll let you all know.
Thanks for the advice so far...

Good job!

The engine light and high emissions warning are probably because you plugged the EGR without programming. I got an emissions warning after the removal because I didn't connect the electrig plug correctly on top of the EGR valve. Plugging it properly removed the message.

interesting post. thanks for sharing. how many miles had your car done? i don't know about dis connect the egr. i read somewhere, the exaust back in the engine was an enert gas which lowers the burn temp of ignition cyle in engine thus reducing emissions. cheers Paul

Hi,
The car has 105k on the clock, so wanted to get the important things done now like the oil and flaps etc...

I checked the plug on top of the EGR is connected securily so that not going to help get rid of the warning

Thanks again for all the replies.
