Luckily, I have a lot of disposable income (that means I have lots of unused $20 bills.) Thanks for your concern, though. So you can sleep better tonight, I have a 2004 that has never had the steering fluid filter changed. And, it's my position that it's still money reasonably well spent. I might even spend another $20 on something else tomorrow, sorry to say.

Be careful when use Lubrizol LZ6178 bmw part# 83-29-0-447-661.
It is recommended for ATF ONLY.

Also when you perform the DIY make sure you lubricate the joints alone the steering column and the extended bleeding procedure.

Totally get it. I've done some more research and it turns out there is an additive called Lubrizol 6178 that should also be added when you do the fluid flush that is supposed to really help. I'm going to pick some up and add that and see if it does anything. If not I will start lubing parts individually.

I was out of town for a week so I will try to get to it this weekend and will update you. Mine uses ATF, so should be good there. Will follow the instructions (adding warm, bleeding etc.), thanks for the reminder.

Well I added it last weekend. Didn't really do much, so it must be another issue. I don't drive the car much so maybe it needs some time to lubricate everything, but so far it has not worked.

Spoke too soon, my friends. Took about 10 days but it is now fixed. I guess it just took some time. I don't put many miles on it. Now to the check engine light...
