I'd say it also depends on whether you are new to Diesel ownership. I never ever thought I'd be driving a diesel AND enjoy it but I'm so pleased I went for the (218) 530D rather than the 525D. The sheer grunt from the 530D makes up for drop in refinement in moving over to Diesel in the first place. I'm getting about 36mpg mixed and its fun, fun, fun to drive. If the new 530D is more refined I'd go for another one in an instant (well that is until I could afford the 535D!)
The new 530d (2005) is much more refined and powerful than ours (piezzo electric ignition, all aluminium block)

It is also more refined 535d which is based on the engine in our cars - not the new one.

The 525d engine was changed introduced in 2004 - I'm not sure if the old e39 engine was ever used in the e60 525d - but I would check before buying to make sure you are getting the latest spec 177bhp.

The 2004 525d was the latest engine with particulate filter etc and 177 bhp. Whilst being a 525d driver I personally would still consider carefully which model and age. The auto box does appear to have a more detrimental affect on the 525d fuel economy. An 04 525d with a DMS chip and warranty would be more preferable to me than a 2003 530d. Power and torque are virtually identical but you will get a more refined engine with the 525d. DMS also improves fuel econmy with the increased torque.

(They also offered the keys to a 535d, but my wallet declined the offer).
Is't it sad?

I have the pre Sept 2005 and happily we are living 2gether, this weekend my friend's 520d gets 200 and mine 260bhp so power is solved , and sorry mine was never noisy. It's true when I am driving I cannot listen to it from the outside

Actually..good point Skaffa I forgot there is no manual option on the 535D
- sounds like you and me are both rare manual diesel drivers out of choice. I had to scour the UK to find a manual diesel to even test drive.
