Last week I got a letter from Tire Rack with a recall notification for Dunlop Winter tires, see attached. I bought the Winter Sport 3D 225/50R17 last fall and had them on for about 4000 miles. Didn't notice any problems and found them pretty good. Now they say the tires don't meet "plunger energy requirements for an extra load tire", whatever that is.

I called Tire Rack and they told me you have to:
1) purchase new tires from Tire Rack, free shipping
2) have them mounted and balanced (if you have winter wheels)
3) call Tire Rack again to arrange pickup of old tires (free of charge)
4) fax copy of bill for mounting and balancing to Tire Rack for reimbursement (up to $25 per tire)
5) get reimbursed for the new tires
I still have to find out if you can also purchase tires that are more expensive than the old ones.
My only concern would be that the TPM sensors might get damaged during changing the tires, since that would not be covered by the reimbursement.
Did any of you get the same letter and did you already get new ones? Would you choose Dunlop again or rather go for others like Bridgestone Blizzaks?

So, my 275/35-18 Dunlop Wintersport M3's were part of this recall. One small problem....No one in the country has this tire in this size...not TiresPlus not DiscountTire, not TireRack...NO ONE. I called Dunlop directly to see what is going on and guess what? They don't have any either and aren't slated to make more till after the first of the year. BAH!!!
So where does that leave me? The customer service representative at Dunlop said they would credit me for the 275/35-18's at a Tire shop of my choice. I then told them what about my front tires?? I told the rep. that I am not going to drive around on a mismatched set of winter tires. I pushed him and they said they would credit me for the fronts as well but again where does this leave me? The only winter tire I can seem to find in a a 275/35-18 is made by Hankook.
Anyone have any experience with Hankook winter tires or know of another winter tire in this size??
Any advice would be most appreciated.

BTW, how did you like the staggered snow setup? Not too wide for adequate grip back there?

Why does your setup have to be staggered for the winter? Just get some 245/40/18 on all 4 corners. I know you know this!

I had Bridgestone RE960 All season's, but I felt they werent as good as strictly winter tires.
