My Ride: 2006 530xi 12/05 production, monaco blue/gray, steptronics, premium, cold weather.
My 530xi with steptronics will start on M2 from dead stop on DS. I thought this was interesting not using M1 at all. Gear ratio is low enough to move the car without stalling. It also goes up to M6 manually.
Anyone with thoughts?

My Ride: F11 535i M-Sport,, Silver, Black Leather, LED Adaptive headlights
Model Year: 2015
Engine: N55
My 530D will pull away in M2 with no problem at all.
In fact the D mode usually starts off in 2nd.
In DS though if left to itself it should start in 1

See this thread for more discussion and see my post #15 on the various auto modes. Please note that if you are in DS or D Sport or D that the gear you are in should be referred to as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th as they are all shifting "automatically". "M" should be reserved for discussion of the Manual Mode which is not D, DS or D-Sport. You do, however, get to it thru DS. So if in manual mode then yes, you would use M1....M6 in discussion. Also within Manual Mode there is some forced shifting to protect us from destroying the engine (REDLINE) or lugging the engine too bad (downshifting)

Now I use DS in town too although not always speeding but still it is one, then when I want I change.
DS starts in M2, the good thing in DS that I see M6 at the top gear
Today DS hard accelerate and slow down then again the hard kicked in my back wow that was hard, but normally no issue yet with tranny but will get end of March the SW updated, will check it again then.

On my 5, DS would start in 1st if throttle usage was aggressive enough currently/recently. Or if the inclinometer sensed an uphill start. Otherwise it would ease off in 2d, although heavy throttle would kick it down.
M1 BMW claims is used also for low-traction situations. I guess this means snow, but it could mean heavy acceleration.
M2 is a great "1st" gear to start out in. Especially with sport mode on (more aggressive throttle response) and with a "loose" converter (I really notice the torque converter's effect in my V8 in 3rd/4th gear, not as much w/ the I6).
AFAIK 5's will even let you start out in M3, though I feel that the TC is being used too much if one were to use this from a flat or uphill start.
M1 is so low that you really can't use it for all-out performance. I get better acceleration starting in M2, it just redlines in M1 too quickly. Going around a turn and going down to M1 is only going to torque-brake your head into the windshield and slow you down after throwing you off your line.
Now make that final drive ratio taller, start out in M1 all the time and cruise 80mph at 1800 rpm... There's an idea.
