A buddy of mine told me that he heard from and M5 owner that it's not good to change from D to DS while being in motion. Motion means even high speeds. This is my first car with an auto geabox. I only drove manuals.
Now i told him that i don't know 100% but i know that changing like that doesn't hurt the gearbox whatsoever because it's more software related than mechanical. From what i know not much happens in the gearbox while switching to DS in motion.
So why do you guys think? I ask u because i want to be 100% sure about this.

Your right, it is software triggered my electical switch. Instead of moving shift lever, you could depress "Sport" button, which does the same thing. Only difference is DS prepares you to use the M/S mode by moving + or -. SO you have to switch to DS in motion to get to the Manual shift mode. What does an M5 owner know about a Step Tranny anyway? Pure BS. NO such warnings or suggestions in owners manual or TIS bulletins. You may ignore this hogwash.

Forgot to add that from day one I have been using and switching in and out of modes from dead stop up to 120 MPH. If there was to be a problem it sure should have appeared by now.

Saw your X5 correction; perhaps they have a issue there; not sure of their tranny model.

Totally safe to switch at any time. However, switching from D to DS usually causes you to drop down one cog - thus increasing the revs...

well me having the SMG paddles on the steptronic I use the DS/M mode all the time and due to high trafic I swith to D / DS every so often during driving. I was worried a lot at the beggining. You know having my car modified like that. but here is something that made me feel good:
The new 7er serie has steptronic and has buttons to switch the gears on the steering wheel as a standart - therefore I assume is is totaly safe and approved by BMW. Also Alpina makes buttons to switch steptronics on the wheel as well. And also i've heard some verified inside info that the new 3er serie will have paddles for the steptronic soon as an option.
To sum it all up I believe it is all safe to play with the stepronic modes since it is available by BMW!!!!

Also why it would be even there if it would be bad.

And one more thing. Audi's tiptronic is totaly the same thing as BMW steptronic, done by the same manufacturer. And Audi has buttons on the wheel for ages, so does the VW Touareg.....

Quick Reply: DS and D in steptronic.
