I understand that BMW has recalled the high pressure fuel pump recently. I am not a mechanic, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned this.
If the car is not getting enough fuel, can't it run rough? If the car is not getting fuel, it will stall. If the pump is working intermitently wouldn't it be hard to start after it stalls? etc etc. It's worth looking into.
