It is strange. No clue about the weather effect, but it could have something to do with this.
If I drive a bit faster than the law allows for a fair distance (+150km), it does NOT do this cleaning routine. But with a lot of stop and go driving, cleaning mode goes on every third day.
The smell almost reminds me of "burnt clutch" oder.
Sounds like another visit to BMW is in order...

Therefore, more particles are produced and the filter gets glocked faster, so it has to clean itself more often. Sounds reasonable to me.
Oh yeah, the smell is not a fault, it's a purchased feature

I am posting this in the E60 Discussion forum because the E61 forum is on vacation. Or something.
I have a 2005 530d (160kW) that I have owned since last November. It is the first diesel BMW that I have owned with the evil DPF - my 2001 320d Touring did not have one.
Lately, the DPF seems to be in "cleaning mode" every 200km or so and it is annoying as hell. Not only that, but it smells! WTF?
Is this normal for a car that only has 76,000km on the dial? If any other diesel owners have noticed anything strange about their DPF, please chime in.
And tell me if it is Ok to remove the damn thing...![Fear](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/fear.gif)

Question is what triggers the dpf process - is there a sensor somewhere that can be replaced?

My 530D does it about once a fortnight. The signs are: delayed response in acceleration, increased sound from the exhaust as though it may have a hole, and finally a smell from the back of the car when you stop. I think it smells of burning rubber and assumed it was a hotter exhaust than normal and the rubbers holding it in place were extra hot! However, I accept that this may be fumes from the process itself.
I guess the cleaning process if dependant on driving style, stop start, speed etc, so will differ between cars.
Ian.

I have noticed this with my current 2005 530dA 218ps but didn't with my previous two 5ers. With this one its not driven much and if it is, its mainly around the city. My previous two 5ers were driven 1000km autobahn EVERY week and I therefore did not notice the DPF at all.
I'm glad I read this post because I have been a little concened about noises coming from my exhaust, which PatrickE61 described as "sounds like your muffler has fallen off"
, and this now all makes sense with the feedback given above about the DPF. I am concluding that my car's DPF "works as designed".
I have been trying to plan in motorway trips at least once every couple of weeks, even if its only an hour's worth of fun driving to "no where", to ensure the engine gets the chance to warm up, do whatever it needs to do (e.g. DPF) and at the same time put a big
