National speed limit is 65 mph. Double that is 130 mph. No way. I had a Chevy Impala as a loaner car once and it got scary once I was up to 80 mph and I consider myself a very capable driver. Our e60s can handle 100 mph as if it were 70mph, but cars such as Chevys and Hondas, it gets dicey when they are in triple digits.
I think the on the interstate, doubling the speed limit potentially lands you in jail. I know in Houston metro area, that is the case.

I think if the car, driver, and road condition permit (with except of the speed limit sign), I'd go for it. A case for driving faster than the speed limit when road conditions permit is to experience the upper limitations of one's driving skills, the car, and the travelled road itself. But doubling the speed limit is mostly for the "rush" feeling. When you know your limits, you become better drivers.

Experiencing it on the track is not the same as the road you frequently travel. The problem with most drivers is that they either don't pay attention when driving and/or drive wreckless because they don't know the limits of the vehicle and themselves.

I don't consent to driving double the speed limit, but I do encourage people to experience/test their driving capabilities and vehicle when road conditions permit.

Is that the case in USA,? I thought that over there 200mph was the norm if you got an M5, 525i doing do their potential.
Freedom

What are the limits there on a motorway (freeway, highway) as most vids on utube are of bmws /e60s doing some ultra high speeds

is it the same in Canada?

i thought it was bad here in UK,

I was in US a few years ago and when you go there on holiday and cruise around the speed isn't that bad although sometimes it was a little too ... I tried to drive at 105kmh (about 65mph) here in Belgium (the 200km I do every day for work) and gave it up very quickly. Here the limit is 120kmh (75mph) on highways and 90, 70, 50 and even 30kmh on smaller roads. I mostly drive 20 to 40kmh too fast and got two speeding tickets the last month

My personal comfort level is at around 150kmh (95mph) with a max of 180kmh (110mph) but it probably depends on how fast you can drive on a regular base.

I like the idea of a permit to drive faster after some extra test of driver and car but double the speed ???

Drive slow and save ... or pay

I digress, but my first car's top speed was 76 mph downhill. It was rather frightening at that speed, BTW.
On my present car, I'm just settling down in 3rd gear at that speed.

I'd guess that 80 is about the maximum safe speed limit on most US highways. Without rigorous driver's training, car inspections, and strict enforcement of the rules of the road, I can't see faster limits as being viable.

doubling the speed limits.... ehh.... depends. depends on all conditions if they permit plus all the other factors of that moment. why do it? not to be a smart@$$ or anything but well, why not? after considering everything..

but one thing, isnt hitting triple digits considered as "criminal speeding" or something like that? i forgot if i asked this question before but sorry i forgot.

yes sirr.. tripple digits is WRECKLESS DRIVING... and means they can take you to jail... forget the ticket part. atleast here in FL thats how it is.

I did 150 mph in Germany when I took delivery last year. No problem there since car and Autobahn are made for that kind of speed. And, having lived in Germany most of my life, I may say that I have some experience driving fast.

But here in the US? Do 100+ on the NJ Turmpike and you'll most likely lift off going over the next bump in the road or you kill your rims at the next crack or pothole! If the road conditions were better it was a different story. And given the heavy traffic here this is a mute point most of the time anyway. It might work in rural Nevada, though.

BTW if you have intentions going double the speed limit make sure your radar detector is working properly...

Don't complain about speeds in UK: not so bad driving there (a week ago I was on the M25 @100 MPH and it's raining hard) .
Bye!

i drive about40 miles to work everyday in my work truck(2000 f-150) about 80-90 mph each way. ive also been in my buddys eclipes that was all moded out and we got that up to 175 mph on the 91 freeway, we didnt drive like that for long but still.for the person saying that any other car couldnt drive in triple digits is a dumbass just because you can afford a bmw doesnt mean you need to put other cars down. some rich snob who drives a lambo probably says the same thing about you driving in your car. anyways ive had my car up to 120-130 on the 15 south(08 535i).
