Bimmer Board Buds,

Why is it that the doors lock automatically after a few miles per hour, but they don't UNLOCK when you park the car, so a person doesn't have to double clutch the door handle every time you open the door? It's no real help to press the unlock button on the dash, still basically two actions needed to perform what should be one...

Am I wrong, or should there be a configurable option that allows for the doors to automatically unlock when you put the car in park?

Your opinions please.

An option would be nice--at least to allow the driver's door to be single clutched after parking/turning the car off. In this regard, there is no reason not to allow the driver's door to be unlocked and opened with just a single clutching. And, why not let the passengers single clutch to unlock/open after parking/turning the car off? Double clutching allows one to unlock without opening, but why would you want to do that? If I pull on the handle, then I want the door to open.

If you have the right setting in the iDrive menu, the doors unlocks when the ignition is switched off.

I don't want mine to do that, but why the double clutching regardless?

That makes too much sense ... so, of course we don't have that here in the U.S.

My 1995 5 series would unlock ALL doors with a double pull of the driver's interior door handle. I loved that feature and wish we could do the same with the E60.

mleuba - you can unselect the option to have the doors lock when you start rolling, if you want.

I have had 3 BMW and a bunch of other cars before and only the Bimmer does that so just an assumption

My last three BMW's did this too and I have no problems with it. I think BMW considers it a safety thing. Having to pull the handle twice to open a locked door eliminates any accidental opening of the door if someone pulls it once while, say, the car is in motion (like what would happen if you were driving an M-B.)

Pulling on it twice makes perfect sense since you're saying "I really want to open the door now."

That said, I always use the door unlock switch -- it's not at all hard to get in that habit. Doing things this way, the rest of the car is unlocked so I can get things out of the back seat (like my briefcase) or out of the trunk without having to fiddle with the key, etc. Also, since I leave the keys in the ignition while parked in my garage, I'm able to access all doors and trunk easily.

I always use the unlock button too, and I set it so it unlock after I switch the car off, I don't see it a big problem. On the other hand I agree with Rudy that if you pull the handle and the door opens it does possess a problem ie. Door opens accidentally.
