My '04 520i had them but my '05 523i doesn't.

This is not speculation, it's from one of the guys who worked in the team that developed the flaps.

Could very well be but there are still inconsistencies on cars in the same market - with and without? From what I can remember, the rad on the 523i, I think, is somewhat bigger than that on the 520'. Do they want the 520i to run hotter
or the 523i to cool quicker ?

But we do get 120F/45C+ temps, on 6 lane freeways with traffic like you wouldn't believe. Of course, a few flaps won't help cool you at 5mph over a 2hr commute.

And I dunno about my fellow US owners, but I don't exactly hang about when the wife isn't in the other driver's seat.
