I'm on my 3rd set of Dunlaps in 18,000 miles (dealer replaced at no cost to me because of the irregular wear and excessive road noise problem). I noticed a LARGE difference in ride quality among the sets. The first set rode very harshly. The 2nd two sets have been much more comfortable. All 3 sets of tires were identical as far as I could tell from their appearance. I suspect this could account for some of the different experiences reported here.

PS - I have comfort seats and love them.

Raighne, as there is a known 'sensitivity' within the household emanating from 'they whom must be obeyed' (and the indifferent road surfaces in Ireland) would it not make sense to stick with the SE (ditch the M-Sport suspension harshness) and add the dynamic drive option - and, to keep in the good books with your partner add the comfort seats too! - Really, the comfort seats are light years in front of the standard or sports seats for support and comfort in any given situation IMO that is, and it seems of others here too.
It is rare to be under pressure from within the household to upgrade the car and yes, I intend to take full advantage of same pressure

Current thinking is to go for SE w/ standard suspension plus Dynamic Drive to give some sportiness in twisties and comfort in straight line driving. Comfort Seats are also on the list as I will be in big trouble if the next car doesn't bring serious improvements in passenger comfort and it sounds like they might help. Not sure what size wheels yet but 17" seem to be the best choice and maybe with this setup the RFTs won't be so bad (and if it's a problem still they can be got rid of on the E60 at least, while the E90 has no room for a spare).

I was mainly interested if comfort seats really helped offset some of the discomfort attributed to RFT and it looks like the jury is still out on that one. I would still like to have run-flat tyres for safety... if I can find a setup which edges the trade-off between safety and ride comfort a bit more towards comfort.

Anyway, I'll be test driving soon but also find the 'opinions' of people on this forum quite invaluable in the decision making process too. Thank you all for chiming in!

And the e60 doesn't have "room" for a wheel/tyre with a puncture...

I removed the spare tire from my Lexus to make room for the stereo install. And that car didn't have runflats.

Somehow, I survived.

Excellent.

We do, however, all operate on different risk assessment thresholds - otherwise RFTs would have an even smaller market share than they already do.

My point was not the lack of room for the spare, however, rather there is nowhere built to put the damaged wheel/tyre (apart from the boot or the cabin!).

I have comfort seats and have run with the original RFTs and current non-RFT snow tires. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference between the comfort of the ride when I switched tires. All this rumble about ride quality with RFTs seems overblown to me. P.S. Comfort seats are definately worth the cost if you drive many miles.
So RFT high performance summer tires feels like non-RFT snow tires....that's saying a lot! LOL!

So there's room for a full-size spare?

Yeah... But you'd struggle if you had a loaded boot (trunk).

Run flats are just rediculous. If anything get rid of them, they are so noisy and make the ride harsh.

I need to get some non run flats also.
