DIY replace air filter 2010 535
 

I realize that it is probably very easy but can anyone point me somewhere to shows me how to change the air filter of a 2010 535? Pictures help me a lot. I am not very experienced at this.
Is it just a matter of taking the cover off and then undoing the 4 clips and easing the top up and replacing the filter?
I've heard that maybe I also have to remove the clamp that is holding the top on and unclip the intake snorkel and disconnect a sensor in the back. Do I have to do all this too?
Any help would be most appreciated. Dealer wants $130 to do this and that seems like a lot for a $30 part.

On a 2006 530xi, it is as easy as you ask. I'm sure it isn't hard. Might they also replacing the micro-filters in that price (that's the cabin air filters)? On my car there are two and they are another $30+ for the pair online.

No, it is super easy. On the air box lid there are 4 metal clips that you slide off and then the lip lifts up. Pull the filter, put in the new one, put the lid back on and push the clips back on. Should be 5 minutes, maybe 10 for a noob.

Also, have a vacuum on standby. Sometimes you will discover some very strang things hanging around inside the box. After I remove the filter I normally use my vacuum on the box and then a moist rag to just wipe it out, then install the new filter.

+1 on Booyaazaa and Tonyb635 said. Also the metal clips detach away from the box and are secured on the bottom portion of the air box…they won't fall into the engine bay. I had a stubborn clip, so I had to use a flat head screwdriver on the back side to get leverage to slide it off. Good luck.

Thanks for all the responses. No. the $130 is only to change the air filter and no, the cabin filter does not have to be changed. They claim it is 30 minutes work.
The dealer says that besides the 4 clips, they remove some sensor wire attached to the front and detach the intake so that they can get to the bottom of it or some such to clean it. Does any of that make sense since I can only understand what tonyb635 says that I should vacuum out the box and wipe it with a moist rag.

130 is a lot just to change out an air filter, whatever the dealer is doing doesn't hurt, but it sounds like a rip-off at that price. So just get the filter and do it yourself. Also it's good practice to vacuum and wipe down the airbox like tony mentioned.

30 minutes? :nono: Maybe for an oil change but for sure not to change the air filter.
