I just got a SW update and noticed that when I turn off the display like I alwys did before, the entire screen goes dark. Prior to my SW update, when I turned off the screen, the radio station and clocked stayed. I like that better.

Yeah, I noticed that too when I received an upgrade a couple months ago. Too bad, since, like you, I actually liked it better before where the clock and RDS still showed.

I think they should give us an option under the iDrive "display off" setting to either have it completely off (like what it's doing now) or menu off with bottom line showing (like it was before). This way they should be able to keep most of us happy :P

When the display is off, is it totally dark? On my version 12.2, when you turn off the display, you can still see the screen, it's just blank (the backlight is still on to some degree).

I'd prefer to make it go totally dark, including the status bar. You can see the clock between the speedo and tach. If I am darkening the screen (which I'd only do on long night highway drives), I'd temporarily set the diamond button on the steering wheel to toggle it on and off. That way, when I want to see something like eta to destination or CD track, I can flip on the screen and then back off. I do that now but when the screen is off, it's not really dark...
