I had no problem this morn playing SIRIUS with the door open. I think I just turned the key to position 2. And, you could always just open a window.
What the hay, a little water inside wouldn't hurt anything.
Well it's either the window or the door...

More seriously, if you use key postition two, it won't chime but be sure to turn off the climate control and press the button near the overhead map lights to kill the interior lights -- you'll significantly decrease your chances of killing the battery. Just remember that you have to kill the lights again if you open or close a door...
Right, good points.

My radio/CD plays without the ignition key in.
Just press in the volume control knob on the dash without the key inserted.
Yup for 20 mins...
I'll try it on mine. I wonder how many useful things we never learn because reading manuals is so boring and sometimes problematic, at least for me, without being hands on at the same time. And, there always are the issues of manual inaccuracy and poor explanations--not just BMW, of course.

For what it's worth, my radio doesn't work without the key. I guess that's a feature that was added in later software?

Really? Thats been a feature of "BMW" for quite a while... they even put that feature in the cheapie MINIs.

Does the key have to be out? Are there other conditions that must be met? I did a quick test on my car and it didn't work. It never worked on either of my E39's so I'm not sure what you mean by "quite a while."

I have used this feature with the key in the ignition, or in my pocket.

My CIP is around 13.1 or 13.2. I am sure yours is later than this.

Thats weird... mine worked with the original S/W version that came with the car and now I have 16.2 and it still works.

Wonder if it has anything to do with NAV and non NAV cars...

It works in my e60 and I don't have a current software version. It worked in my e39 and my wife's 3 series too. I think it only works for something like 20 minutes after you open the doors or take the key out of the ignition, after which the car goes to sleep... I just checked - pressed the key to unlock, opened the door and pressed the volume control (key still in hand) and the radio came on...
