Yesterday I was reversing to park, and looking (as one does) in the off-side rear view mirror. Which was helpfully dipped to show me the kerb. Then, when I steered to the left to straighen the car up, without disengaging reverse, the mirror started lifting itself up. Then it went down again. And up. All seemingly depending on small steering movements.
Shifted into D, mirror went up and stayed up. Put back into R, same story again. Switched the mirror switch to passenger side, mirror came back up; switch back to driver side, and it started flapping again. Switched off the engine, and after re-starting it behaved normally (dip when in R, stay up in any other position).
This has happened a few times since I got the car (5 months ago), but it does not seem to be associated to any specific conditions. Anybody else experienced something similar? Could it be a prelude to some steering sensor replacement? :'(

On some cars, if a mirror has been manually centred, when the mechanism is at an extreme, this can cause fthe mirror to "click" back and forth as it tries to "exceed" the "maximum displacemnent" of the mechanism.

But surely the "end of run" manifests itself by flipping back and forth by a few mm?
What I'm talking about is motion from vertical/normal driving position to dipped (not quite to the bottom, but the same position it takes when it works properly for reversing). At any rate, it does not seem a common fault...
