Just out of curiosity, was it the X5 that made you so adamant in your advice? The reason I ask is that my aunt's '02 X5 has similarly ripped out her wallet! Just after the warranty expired her transmission went out to the tune of around $7k.
We drove the car in for what seemed like a minor repair and an hour later were informed that the transmission was failing and needed to be replaced (with a new one yet as BMW would not use a rebuilt one), at a cost of around $7500. It was to say the least a bit shocking!
That along with a few other "minor" though expensive repairs has placed me in the "warranty only" group from now on!
