Please help me!!!!

It is time to kick my old company car into touch and get a new machine and I really fancy a 5 series.

My dilemma is this, I have obtained quotes for a 520d M Sport (Carbon Black, Advanced Air Con, Vis. Pack, Load through system and interior light pack) and a 525d M Sport (Visibility Pack, Load through system and interior light pack) and the cost per month differs by approx ?80..

My budget allows for the 525d but only with a couple of options whereas I could get the 520d and add extra toys like leather, better stereo and bigger wheels .

What would you guys do?

Bigger engine for me every time - more power, more torque and two more cylinders but I guess it all depends on what type of driving you do most often. If you do a lot of long motorway trips at a steady speed then you might prefer the 520d but if your trips are on A or back country roads then you might prefer the extra overtaking ability afforded by the bigger engine.

I would probably go for more toys. Sure, engine is important but I'd probably take a better interior environment over a hike in power. If I were buying an out and out sports car then my answer would be different.

yep same for me here. Options are very important, but do not forget the 520d already has a lot power...
And if you are really not convinced you still can get a chip that can even overwhelm the 525d...

You're choice but i should know...

Have you considered the Co2 figures in your ?80 month difference?.., I had the same dilema last month and opted for the 520d SE with toys rather than the bigger engine. the 520d is 158mg which rounds down to 155 for tax purposes. I hate giving anything to the tax man.

Options make or break a car. Sure the engine is nice, but with the amount of cars on the road these days not to mention police camera vans , who really gets to open the car up.

Sitting in traffic a well spec'd 520d is a nicer place to be than a 525d

Obviously I'm the exception in buying a BMW because it's a driver's car as opposed to buying a mobile lounge. Incidentally, I find plenty of opportunities to open my car up even here in the crowded South - my secret is to get up early and get on the roads before the local traffic police start their first shift!

As for one of the previous comments by fellow contributor 'BMW ///M 525xi' that a chipped 520d will overwhelm a 525d - a chipped 525d will blow any 520d into the weeds!

I still say go for the bigger engine - if you want options over having a real driver's car then go buy a Volvo!

And if you want a proper driver's car go buy a Lotus Elise.

Most cars are compromises, but clearly part of the attraction of the E60 is its driver focused nature. I just happen to want my car to be a nice place to be for those occasions where I'm on the motorway or stuck in traffic. If I had a commute across country lanes then my answer would be different. Or my car would...

Why buy an auto then dude? I thought a real drivers car had to be a manual or an SMG? Sounds like youve gone down the road of the old man mobile lounge a bit yourself ...
