Thumbs up

Hello everyones!

I've a "strange" question...

I don't find any indication into the user manual concerning the differential oil change and density

Same story for the Steptronic.... which oil have to be used? How many km is the maintenance interval?

My dealer told me they are "lifetime" it means no change no level check...

It's true? my car have 2 years and 56k km's.... do I've to change the oils???

I've checked into the TIS but it's in german and I've some problems to understand all...

thanks a lot in advance for your help

Ciao to all

BMW specifies its automatic transmission fluid as "lifetime" so nothing to change...whether you buy the idea of lifetime or not, is another story.

BMW specifies lifetime on the gearbox and diff fluids. Since BMW does not specify what lifetime is (100K? 200K?) I change them between 50k and 80k. I haven't change them in my E60 but I have changed them every 50k in my M3 and the difference is very noticeable.

I can probably look at the TIS and get you the specific part numbers but you need to provide us with the specifics of your car. Keep in mind that M cars have LSD and therefore need different oil. There is a specific SIB issued for this as many dealers have filled the ZF diffs with the wrong oil causing grinding after a while. Also BMW does not sell those fluids by the quart but rather with the gallon at about $60/gallon. So you may want to find somebody else who is due for diff oil change.

A good alternative is RedLine 75W90 and Lubromoly LM 75W90 Synthetic Gear Oil for the differential. RedLine MTL for manual transmissions is also good.

If I may ask, what kind of difference do you see or feel, is it with acceleration, a smoother idle, or??? Thanks.

First of all I have a manual tranny and after the oil change it feels smoother in shifting. I'm tempted to say shifts faster but that could be in my mind. The differential is more optical than anything else. I've seen crap coming out with the old oil even after only 50k miles. I don't put my cars on the track so I can't really speak about performance in extreme conditions.
I hope this answers your question.
