SMG/Manual in 6er = 3.23; in 545 = 2.93
Auto: 6er = 3.46; 545 = 3.38

I am not so convinced that the ECU maps or SMG software are different but could be wrong.? I think performance differences are weight & gearing related for the minor differences reported.

My impression was that the rear ends for the 645i and 545i are the same--at least in the step transmission. As I recall, I checked this out on the BMW NA site when considering which car to buy. Currently, I can find no pertiinent 650i data for the same comparisons for the 650i and the 550i (same as 545i) on the BMW NA site. I am going to presume you are correct until we find differently. What you say is the best way to account for the small performance differences--a better explanation than the very small difference in weight.

[/quote]Digging around on BMW NA, I found the following:

550i0--CD = .29, and lbs. = 3,814

650i-CD = .30, and lbs. = 3,814

I thought that earlier figures gave the 650i a slight weight advantage. And, I thought that the same for the 545i and 645i. Maybe the rear-end ratios are slightly different for the 2 45s and the 2 50s--thus, expaining the very small performance differences. But, CD gives a tiny advantage to the 5 series cars.

Edit: BMW Germany shows:

Rear end--650i steptronic coupe--3.38

Rear end--650i steptronic cabrio--3.46.

I am beginning to think that the publicized performance difference is bogus--designed to make the more expensive and sportier car appear slightly faster. Or, more innocently, the difference could actually have been produced in a test, and BMW did not think about how odd the difference would appear on paper.

It is sort of surprising sometimes what a 50 mile trip (North Phoenix to the far side of Mesa and back) can do. My MPG went to 16.5 from 15.6 and my ave. MPH went from about 28 to 30.5. I started my averages over after my throttle body/B&B installations at the end of August. Since then I have gone about 300 miles.
