According to the brochure in front of me now the 535d and the 550i have identical unladen weight at 1735kg. Unless the 550i suffers from excessive front axle weight , the 535d doesn't either. And as swajames says, the transmission is also a factor in the additional weight, and it sits well behind the axle. Like other BMWs, the E60 diesels have 50:50 weight distribution. The weight difference indeed has negligible effect on acceleration (it's the horsepower that makes the difference there), and the handling and balance shouldn't be impacted either.

When I swapped cars in May this year I tested both a 535d and a 5501 and while there was a difference in off the line acceleration, the cornering and roadholding dynamics seemed identical to me.

I saw TopGear last night wherein they tracked both the diesel and the 550i side by side. Pretty cool,

Cal

Yeah, Mr. Clarkson had some disparaging things to say about the diesel's weight in that video.

all he said was it had an anvil in the nose, not bad when you consider the plus points
cheaper
quieter
more torque
less to maintain

and not a lot in it for everyday driving
plus here in europe residual sales are quite a bit higher.

what he didnt mention is for only a few ?/$ you can take the bhp / torque levels and vastly increase them, giving blistering performance.

when i have fun with my colleagues M5 he can take me from a standstill and kill me on top speed, but through the 6 gears (everyday driving) he cant get away from me.
the diesel can hold its head up high there 3 litre diesel...5 litre petrol.....

E60...i love um all.

It would have been interesting, and probably a lot closer if the 'Stig' was behind the wheel of the 535d.

Same lap time as a Nissan 350Z....Not bad at all...

Both those cars were screaming for a mechanical LSD, thats the thing I hate without, sliding is very un-gracefull and twitchy, couple of moments in the top gear vid where both cars nearly get away or the other car has to do something to avoid hitting the other whilst its sliding around like a breeze block.........shame, my E34 is pure joy to grab by the scruff of the neck and slide around with none of that goings on
