I pick my car up tomorrow and whilst filling up the hire car in order to hand it back tomorrow, I noticed some plastic gloves by the pumps. Do diesel owners find these are necessary when filling up or can they be ignored?

I always use them. You never Know if white van man has been there before you.Only once did i not bother and ended up with a hand that smelt of diesel for hours, and a hand print on the steering wheel that smelt the same.

thanks all. I was just curious why they would be needed in the first place, I've never managed to get petrol on my hands when filling up with petrol and the diesel nossle looks exactly the same as the petrol ones so was wondering why it was felt they were needed.

Here in SA, we cant fill up ourselves even if we wanted to. Each pump needs a tag to activate which the attendants keep on them.
Now if they can only find a way to stop everything from flying out of the various storage compartments each time I accelerate hard!!

I beleive it is to avoid skin contact (may cause skin irritation) & harmful if ingested --> if you then pick up a sandwich without first washing your hands!
If you drive a diesel car you may get repeated exposure.
Contains hydrocarbons (obvious I know)
Suspected human carcinogen (carcinogen = may cause cancer!)
..Wear a glove!!!!! ......................risk reduction.
.. or get someone else to fill the tank!
