As most Diesel E60 owners know you can for about ?500 boost the power and torque figures by at least 25%. But what I find confusing is why BMW go to all the trouble of producing a twin turbo motor for the 535d to give 272bhp and 413lb ft when they could easily install a "medium" chip on the existing engine and get the same. I've seen other forum members with over 300bhp and 600lb ft from the 530d. So, does the remapped 530d put the power and torque where you want it making the 535d a waste of time or are 2 turbos the way to go making the moded 530d fast but not quite as good?

553d idea is to make engine work as well low and high end of the rpm range. 535d have 500rpm higher rev range and it pulls better under 2000 rpm.
There is few reasons.

Merv - my thinking would be that the low down punch of the 535d should still be better that a chipped 530d.
Also chipping a 535d should give spectaular results - see other posts today.
I am considering which way to go, get a 535d, chip my 530d or wait patiently for the new M3.

The smaller low end turbo of the 535D would spin up quicker and overcome most of the lag issues of the 530D which chipping wont really sort out.
If the 535D was available here I would have traded long ago!!

If someone don't "get it" after these few nice answers, then I don't know!
However, remember that remapping increases the chance of things going pop - BMW have to strike a balance between power and reliability.

colejl,
You took the words out of my mouth. One word - WARRANTY. It is also doubtful that cars with chips would pass the stringent Euro 4 emission regulations either. If getting extra, reliable, clean bhp was simply a matter of changing engine mapping then that is what BMW would have done.

ISUK:
Warranty (and reputation) is, I think, walking on a tight rope. Company has to be 100% sure that nothing goes wrong and they have to think at least 5 to 8 years ahead.
But if You think that 10 years ago if some one would say that they have production ready diesel almost 100hp per litre, would You believe. But evolution... You know.
