Thumbs up

I was out driving tonight and noticed, under hard acceleration, clouds of smoke being reflected in the headlights of the car behind. Anyone else seen the same?Only done 18k miles!

I would trade a little bit of smoke from the tailpipes for 35+ MPG!

Mine does this. As others have said it's normal for a diesel under hard acceleration as the engine does not burn fuel as efficiently for a fraction of a second when you turn on the power. The smoke is the result of unburnt fuel and it quickly clears as you continue to accelerate.

I think that the appearance is exagerated at night with light behind you. Even happens with my diesel Truck, but in normal daylight, does not seem to be as prominent.

Never seen any smoke - or indeed any sort of diesel smell whatsover - from mine. I guess this is the Euro 3 / Euro 4 difference we're seeing?

In the new E60 530d it is not like that.
Now with the anti particles filter it already does not happen.
E60 Diesel with straight exhaust has antiparticles filter.

My May2004 530d Euro4 doesn't blow any smoke at all .. mileage is now 30k and i do tend to give it a hard time.
I am paranoid about Diesel smoke as this is the first oil burner i have ever owned.. i used to look in the mirror every time i applied the lead foot.. i still do look occasionally but still no smoke. A colleague of mine even suggested i'd re-badged a 530 petrol as he followed me down some winding country lanes which needed lots of up and down gearshifts and said he never saw smoke once... that of course could be his way of rationalising the fact the 530d blew away his merc clk320..(ho ho unfair match.."gonna need a quicker merc")

Is yours Euro3 or Euro4 emmission level ?
