With these gasoline prices and experience with 4 BMW diesels I would recommend Diesel.
Current is E61 535D automatic and mixed consumption with heavy foot is 8.9 not bad for 272HP and 580NM

If looking for pure driving pleasure nothing wins petrol engine, that sound and high revving engine ......

We need a lot more information to help you...
Where do you live? How will you use the car?
How many miles will you drive each year? How much performance do you want?

I love the torque of the diesel, especially when towing. That's why I got it. Then I realised that I can go over 1000km per tankful on the open road, so less stopping and most likely those cars you overtook won't pass you again while you're stopped for gas. And even around town I usually get around 700km on a tank, so again fewer fuel stops. Then if you want more power and torque, you can chip it and get a huge improvement per dollar spent compared to a V8 (We don't get the 535i here).

I can get 5 l/100km on a trip now with the superchip, previously 5.5, driving at around 90-100km/h, going 120km/h it drops to around 7.5 1/100km. Around town between 9 and 10. The superchip has improved economy by around 10%, but I got it for the power and torque increase! Car is a 2004 530d

If you're producing more power there would be more stress on the engine - but can it handle it? I think so, and the Superchip people think so. You have to decide for yourself. Personally I suspect the weakest point is the gearbox...

No I haven't removed the flaps....
