because in a diesel engine the oil is under much higher tollerences, and there are more additives to help with soot etc, intrinsicaly the oil is the same...its just the additives that makes the difference.

And I have been told that the oil in diesel cars gets dirty straight away so you cant actually tell from looking at the oil in a diesel car if its knackered or not. Can in a petrol ! #

Also, my question is , how many litres EXACTLY do you need to replace oil in a 525d ?

Thanks

If the oil is NOT black, it is not doing it's job. ie cleaning the engine. This applies to both diesel and petrol engines. Of course in a brand new engine there is not much to clean and the oil will stay clear longer. And this is just one of engine oils many tasks.

Thats not true colour of the oil has nothing to do with how well its lubricating in either engine, both can have really dark oil that is in good condition still.

I belive you 525d should take about 7.5l same as my 530d.

My 04 525D 177bhp takes 8.3 litres of oil, the owners handbook tells you the capacities if you want to check.

My dealer uses Castrol SLX 5w30, my oil cap says Castrol. I would use what BMW recommend to be honest, but that is just my preference. It is expensive though, i was quoted ?125 inc Vat for oil and fiter from my dealer parts department. In the end because i have a warranty i decided to pay ?165 to get the book stamped for maintaining the warranty.
