Hi guy's

Looking at buying a 2004 54 530d Auto, however I have been reading horrific stories of horrid fuel consumption.

From those who have the 530d (218 bhp engine) in the UK please advise the following...

1. What mpg do you get?
2. How much does it cost you to fill the tank?
3. How many miles do you generaly get from the tank from full to empty?

My driving conditions daily are, go to work at 9am, 15 miles in medium flowing traffic a short dual carrage way drive (4 miles) and the rest 30mph roads.
I then do the same route in opposite direction when coming home at 5pm.
I then go out on a night to pick the missus up at 10pm on a 6 mile round trip back home.
The weekends are casual driving which make up about 70 miles in a 250 mile week.

Can those with similar experience share there thoughts?

Thanks,

Lee.

I'm getting just over 30mpg average and I'm chuffed. On longer runs I can easily see 40mpg with a careful right foot!

Lots of town driving is going to zap the consumption and the autobox doesn't do best at start/stop. I reckon you'll see around 35mpg average. But remember this is a 'performance' car so consumption shouldn't be a priority. Avoid the 525d of the same age as it's likely to give worse consumption!

To fill costs around ?55-?60 depending on how empty - never leave it too late Once full the trip computer often says over 500 miles. The fuel tank is 70l (Just over 15 gallons)

However, so people have reported abysmal figures and from what I can work out you either get one that does ok or you don't! Mine has been a gem, the engine is definitely the star...

I'll also note that the newer software (probably post version 20) have improved the autobox responses and economy. Since being updated mine will shift better and hold gears longer where appropriate. Before it refused to change up early enough and changed down too early thus impacting consumption. I always use the manual mode when doing a motorway trip to force it into 6th as the torque just pulls and pulls...

Well if I get 35 average I will be well chuffed! How are your daily driving conditions as appose to mine? How far do you drive per day etc?

Thanks for the response.

I generally do about 7 miles daily of clear urban driving (Go early, home late - oh, the joys of London commuting!) Then it's a mix at the weekend of urban and extra urban/motorway driving - anything from 20 to 80 miles... Like I said, I'm chuffed with the consumption. Beats my previous 2litre turbo petrol - I could never get that over 30mpg even on a motorway!

Sounds ok. My BMW approved 530d SE auto March 04 with same mileage was ?19k with 12 months warranty. Only 17" wheels, no sat nav or sun roof but a few toys, full leather, heated seats, bluetooth phone, voice recognition, improved sounds, sports steering wheel, folding rear seats, advanced climate control, xenon lights. Could have done with sat nav today exploring the back roads of Croydon.

My 530d does 1000 miles every week now did 20,000 miles in it. I have never reset the computer and i hammer it. 31.3 mpg. ?60 per tank and get roughly 440-500 miles per tank.
Most of my driving is mixed a b roads not a lot of motorway.

It still has 8 months of bmw warrenty left. I may choose to go the warrenty direct route after that.
