My car has clocked close to 40,000kms. I feel the engine getting a bit rough and noisy than before. Not to mention there is a small cloud of black smoke i see at times when I downshift aggressively.

The Indian fuel quality is to blame, BMW does not recommend any diesel fuel additives to be used. But I have seen people overcome the above mentioned problems by using additives. Does anyone have experience on which product works best with the 3 liter diesel engine? Has anyone tried brands such as STP, OWS360 or IFTEX System-D?

Both your cars are fitted with DPFs you shouldn't be seeing any smoke at all from those engines. I cant comment on adatives but the engines shouldn't be be getting rough at such a low mileage.

Try Millers Diesel Power Sport 4, safe to use with DPF car's. Will help keep everything clean, adds upto 4 cetane to diesel fuel so should burn cleaner.

I would suggest using Premium Diesel regularly where it is available in India. I used Speed-Diesel when I lived in Mumbai a few years ago.
Additives can provide some effect but you need to be very sure they wont affect your DPF.
If I were you, I would go for a system flush and clean by a BMW dealership and follow that up with using premium diesel.
It will cost more but it is going to restore your car to optimum driving condition.

40,000 kms is nothing on a modern diesel, it is only bedding in.
You should see smoother operation and better mileage!

I used to use Speed Diesel but my SA asked me to stop using it as they had a 530d go bust thanks to the fuel and BMW did not even cover the warranty.

Don't BMW dealerships do a system flush by default at service? My oil change is due next month.

Millers seems good, will try and hunt for it in Mumbai. Has anyone used OWS products?
