i think it was something to do with the turbo's as most of the damage caused is on that side of the engine. to be honest i dont know a lot about that engine. it was my first bmw! Im defo up for another 5 series (m5 i think)

Nothing like that smoking hot look Sorry to hear about your car, least you got out in time as that looks like some serious heat!!!

turbo side gets dam hot as its also the exhaust manifold side I think! did you notice any loss in performance before you saw the flames / smoke?

yes i was driving along on the motorway and i lost loads of power as if the turbos had packed in! i slowed down and noticed a lot of smoke and sparks coming from the rear so i pulled over and as id just about stopped i noticed the orange glow coming from under the bonnet! and it all just went rapidly down hill from there

Wows sparks from the rear and loss of power sounds like your DPF/ CAT has come off its mount... just guessing really... the amount of heat in that area is

Main thing is your safe the insurance will hopefully take care of the rest and you can look at an M5 soon!!

could have been a high pressure side oil leak at the turbo.. that will burn like hell. And eventuallly Diesel feul once lit, will burn damn hot and hard.. too bad on he carthough.. glad you are OK..
Technically speaking it is still a matte black beamer ;-)
