Didn't realize that possibility
Does the 520d (current engine) also has to do without dipstick?
Iirc, this is only on the petrol engines. The Diesels still do have dipsticks.

Except the 550i which I think has a dipstick (although it is in a very unusual place).

I got a "Low Engine Oil" message today on the way back home.
Would you expect to have to top up between services?

Well, kind of yes.
I always did with my previous car - a MB C class, and I know the BMW N52 is an oil thirsty engine, but I am not sure how thirsty.

It would be a good idea if members here start sharing - how often they top up their oils.

I will start a Poll about this, maybe it would be useful to some.

I had to top up 1 ltr on mine nearly exactly 1000miles before the respective oil changes were due. First time at 17k something and second time at about 34k.
Still more than reasonable oil consumption to me.

Maybe the service intervals should be adjusted across the board.

So just one top up between services. I think this is reasonable

Most cars I owned - except a 1.6 VW Golf - required at least one top up between services; which is OK.
The problem would be a car that requires 2+Ltrs of oil between services. I would call this an oil drinker engine.

Need to compare apples with apples.

Old service intervals were 12months/12000miles, synthetic oils give us 18months/24000 miles.

So one litre during each 12,000 miles - that would equate to 2 litres between service intervals on a modern car.

Oh, and weren't "topups" in the "old days" sold in pints? Now it's litres - almost twice the volume!!!!
