The 545 can definitely NOT beat the M3. Ive had a few run in's with the E90 M3 around town. From the light I'm gravy through 1st and 2nd. About half-way through 3rd i'm toast.
E90/E92 M3 - no. E46 convertible, which was the subject of the thread you linked, absolutely yes.

Truth. I didnt even think the E46 was being referred to. I've had a few run in's with those and I'm reading the other thread right now.
I think its a driver's race.

So my dealer told me that the M3 can wipe out the 545i out easy.... He didn't know I was in the market for an M3 so don't start with all the wise ass remarks about him being a salesman. I was in for service and simply asked him the question. The weight, torque and engine bhp of the M3 outpowers that of the 545i. The 55o with the TT engine he wasn't sure (be close) but the M3 he was convinced could do it...

Oh..and he owns an M3 and a 545i and has been driving them for quite some time (some dealer!)

Why hasn't anyone said to look at the M6? If you are looking at spending $70k, you can get a nice CPO M6 w/low miles and get the best of both worlds: nice coupe looks + V10 engine. I'd go that route.

+1. i am missing the boring part...

THIS is a boring car:

I think if the M3 were a person, it would kick your ass for calling it boring, because it looks like it could kick your ass. a boring car, like the buik lesabre would serve you tea.
Or come nicely equipped with a booster seat and a free can of blue hair dye.

I understand wanting something different this go around....I love the M3, but for me the 3er is a tad small for an ED..

CPO M5 or M6 is what I'd be considering...

I also like the S5 an awful lot...

Quattro, V8 symphony and torque. It's an intoxicating drive (especially for an Audi)

Humbly, I must say:
1) I dont care if he's the dealer saying that. He's not the authority because of it or because he owns both. A smaller car that has less around you when sitting in it makes you feel closer to the ground, has less 'insulation' from the road, etc. This adds to the whole 'its faster' concept. If he has an E90 M3, i dont disagree with him. E46? Not so much.

2)550 has a TT?

As always, the devil is in the details...

What kind of M3 is he talking about? The only one with more torque and markedly higher bhp is the e90/e92 M3. It's obvious that's much, much quicker than a 545 and no one here has ever claimed anything contrary.

The E46, on the other hand, has no such advantage. The E46 M3 coupe is probably a little quicker than a 545, the E46 M3 convertible is probably slower, but either may depend on the driver.

Yep--sure there are many good cars. Too much brand loyalty in me though. I'd never swap my SA, the BMW service etiquette or the fact that the driving experience has been nothing short of incredible for me. Too much factor there to go look elsewhere.

Still your point is well taken...

As far as the boring looks part goes...
